Elsewhere in the country, people who love camping have to either wait out the long winter months or contend with snow and sub-freezing temperatures. But those of us in or near the California deserts are lucky: we can engage in our favorite pastime year-round. ALMO • Snowshoeing through a maze of granite spires in City of Rocks National Reserve is like no other winter experience. A deep silence is overwhelming as you stop on the trail in the middle of a hallway of rocks sprinkled with pinyon pine and underbrush. Horror. Or disbelief. It fills people’s eyes when they hear I’ve been winter camping. Tucking into a tent on a wintry night is not an idea that excites most Albertans. As Mike Gere, a Jasper-based veteran of such adventures, puts it: “People For some, the best part about camping in the wintertime may be the cross-country skiing, ice climbing or hiking up a ridge on snowshoes. When pondering options for outdoor leisure, the winter months may not immediately spring to mind. Few swim, boat or float in January, but there are still hunting and fishing options, and if willing to sleep outdoors,there is winter camping. Though winter Yellowstone winter camping isn’t for everyone, but for the adventurous a trip off the beaten winter path is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But many of us want to eschew the beaten path — even if it is one as laid back as a stay in the Snow Lodge .
Wouldn't this be a great weekend to go camping? As I was writing this commentary late in the week the weather forecasters were calling for a high today of 52 degrees with a low tonight above freezing. Sunday and the next few days was supposed to be comparable. It wasn’t what I expected when I agreed to gear-test some equipment for an outdoor magazine. The tent arrived in November — past the date I would consider camping weather. Snow was on the ground and temperatures were dropping to below freezing at night. A week ago, I may have hinted (or begged) for help from BDN readers.
